Benzodiazepines Treatment

Doctors prescribe benzodiazepines for a range of medical, neurological, and psychiatric disorders. Unfortunately, many individuals have a difficult time stopping the use of benzos. This is mainly due to the medication’s highly addictive nature. Benzos are essential in treating many conditions. However, the drug’s withdrawal symptoms and side effects can make any individual develop a severe addiction.

Alcohol Treatment

Alcoholism, or alcohol dependence, is characterized by addiction and the inability to stop consuming alcohol. People battling alcoholism typically continue drinking despite understanding the consequences. Substance use disorders involving alcohol are highly difficult to overcome alone. Addiction treatment typically consists of specialized programs and therapies. CARE Clinic offers a unique program that uses calculated medications to help ease cravings and withdrawal symptoms in clients. This method allows clients to focus more on their recovery than their withdrawals.

Doctors prescribe opioid medications to their patients to treat chronic pain. Opioids are meant to temporarily help with pain following surgery or similar circumstances. Opioid addiction does not discriminate. Due to the characteristics of opioid drugs, any person can become addicted – and opioid addiction is challenging to overcome. Individuals can experience cravings and withdrawal symptoms from these pain-relieving drugs even while taking them as directed by their doctor. That being said, once an opioid addiction develops, opioid treatment is certainly necessary.

Opioid Treatment
Why Is Opioid Use a Problem?

Opioids are very addictive substances which provide pain relief by acting on opioid receptors in the brain and body. People can legally get access to these medications by getting a prescription from their physician for pain or legally get access to these drugs by buying pain pills off the streets or by using heroin. Because opioids are addictive, people can overdose on them and die. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) “over 81,000 drug overdose deaths in the 12 months ending in May 2020, the highest number of overdose deaths ever recorded.” At the same time, deaths from drug overdose in Mississippi rose by 26%, per the Mississippi Center for Investigative Reporting (10/25/2021). Not only do people addicted to opioids cause tremendous damage to their body/mind, but this addiction also has devastating effects on their families (including unborn children), on their finances, and on their professional careers. Many people will lose everything before they seek help.

What are Opioids?

  • Heroin
  • Codeine (like Tylenol #3 & #4)
  • Hydrocodone (like Lortab, Vicodin)
  • Oxycodone (like Percocet, Oxycon3n)
  • Meperidine (Demerol)
  • Morphine (like MS Con3n)
  • Hydromorphone (Dilaudid)
  • Methadone
  • Fentanyl (Nubain)
  • Tramadol (Ultram)
  • Tapentadol (Nucynta)
How does CARE Clinic Treat Opioid Addiction? We Use One of the Following Medications to Treat Opioid Addiction:
  • Suboxone (consists of Buprenorphine + Naloxone) is a tablet/film which dissolves underneath the tongue.
  • Zubsolv (consists of Buprenorphine + Naloxone) comes in a tablet for and dissolved underneath the tongue.
  • Bunavail (consists of Buprenorphine + Naloxone) Comes in film form and dissolved in the cheek area inside the mouth
  • Subutex (consists of Buprenorphine only) is a tablet/film which dissolves underneath the tongue. Generally, it is used in pregnant or breast-feeding parents
  • Sublocade (consists of Buprenorphine only) is injected once-a-month subcutaneously in the abdomen.
  • Probuphine (consists of Buprenorphine only) is subdermally implanted into the arm once every 6 months.
  • Vivitrol (consists of Naltrexone only) is injected once-a-month intramuscularly.

How Do Buprenorphine/Naloxone/Naltrexone Work and Can I Become Addicted to Any of Them?

Buprenorphine is a par3al opioid against (i.e. activated opioid receptors but only partially, not fully like opioids). Naloxone/Naltrexone are opioid antagonists (i.e. block opioid receptors from being addictive). Even though Buprenorphine works on the same receptors in the brain that are normally activated by opioids, it is a partial agonist, so it does not create the euphoric high nor the withdrawal symptoms which are normally associated with opioids. As a result, people on Buprenorphine can live a normal, healthy life.

Will Buprenorphine (Suboxone) Show Up on a Drug Screen at my Job?

On a normal drug screen, Buprenorphine (Suboxone) will NOT be detected. In order to detect Buprenorphine (Suboxone), special tests will have to be done. If you are a patient of CARE Clinic and the drug screen at your job is positive for Buprenorphine (Suboxone), our clinic will provide documentation to your job (with your written permission) that you are in our licensed medica3on-assisted treatment program and under the care of our qualified medical physician.

We Use the Following Non-Medication Therapies to Treat Opioid Addiction:

We are currently setting up counseling sessions (both individual and group format) for psychological support at CARE Clinic. Currently, we provide all patients with a list of such programs which are available throughout Mississippi. If a patient prefers virtual counseling, we also provide a list for such services. We at CARE Clinic believe that counseling is paramount to changing the biopsychosocial aspect of addiction and we strongly encourage all patients to participate in such sessions.

Heroin Treatment

Heroin is an opioid drug processed from morphine. The substance is a rapidly acting opiate and it, unfortunately, becomes a solution for individuals struggling with withdrawal who can’t obtain a legal prescription. The illegal substance binds to opioid receptors in the brain and causes a dangerously addictive high. Heroin is dangerous in both, the short-term and long-term. Most cases involving heroin addiction call for intensive therapy and treatment programs. CARE Clinic offers medication-assisted treatment that can help curb cravings and withdrawal symptoms, allowing the client to focus mainly on their treatment.

Treatment for Methadone Patients

At CARE Clinic, we understand the difficulties and severity of opioid withdrawal. In addition, we understand the hassle of going to the clinic every morning for methadone – even while in an outpatient setting. Methadone has been the main treatment for opioid addiction for decades. However, methadone can trap patients in a vicious cycle. Our deep understanding of opioid addiction treatment has allowed us to consistently transition our patients from methadone to suboxone. Instead of daily clinic visits for methadone, many of our clients visit the clinic monthly for suboxone.

If I am already on Methadone, can CARE Clinic start me on Buprenorphine (Suboxone)?

Even though Methadone has been the main treatment for opioid addiction since the 1960s, many Methadone patients dislike going to clinic every morning in order to get their daily Methadone dose. Also they cannot just stop taking Methadone because the withdrawal symptoms are severe and long-lasting. Life will therefore revolve around Methadone and many feel trapped. CARE Clinic has successfully taken patients off Methadone in an outpatient setting. This allows for a smooth transition to Suboxone where the patients only have a monthly clinic visits (NOT the daily Methadone visits) and can truly enjoy life while being treated for opioid addiction.

Treatment for Pregnant Patients

CARE Clinic treats patients coming from various circumstances and backgrounds. That being said, co-occurring opioid addiction and pregnancy are an unfortunate, but realistic occurrence. As a result, we offer Subutex to our pregnant or breastfeeding clients that are in treatment. Subutex contains the active ingredient buprenorphine. The tablet/film dissolves underneath the tongue and is a life-saving treatment for pregnant women who are opioid-dependent.

Tobacco Treatment

Dangerous addictions are not only limited to illegal substances. Nicotine is highly addictive and the strength of its addiction is often compared to cocaine or heroin. As a result of its availability and strength of addiction, nicotine and tobacco are some of the most commonly abused substances in the world. CARE Clinic offers specialized treatments, such as cognitive behavioral therapy for those dealing with an addiction to nicotine.

Support Groups

You might be familiar with support groups. Support groups are when members meet to guide each other towards their recovery goals. Support groups are usually moderated and consist of nonprofessional individuals who have gone through similar experiences. Support groups are a great safe space to unpack your thoughts and experiences. Some support groups offer online services such as discussions boards and blogs.
